The KA Edit Family Travel Guide: Kefalonia

Kefalonia, felt unspoilt with quiet nooks, hidden bays, rocky headlands yet surrounded by Ainos Mountain and lush green shrubs and trees. If you prefer wildflowers to wild nights out, Kefalonia is the Greek island you need to visit. It is a picture-book island paradise with mythical Greek history at its heart. The blend of a sea view and being surrounded by mountains was quite something. There is so much natural beauty with a bucket load of history too.

There are plenty of things to do and places to explore. We visited for 17 days, saw so much and still have so much more to see. If like us, exploring is high on your agenda, I would recommend hiring a car and setting off around the island visiting the unspoilt mountain villages and colourful destinations mostly rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953. Northern Kefalonia remains our favourite part of the island, on our next visit we plan to stay further North. We enjoyed being based in the South, but on driving further North, we felt it was more our vibe.

Shaped like a jigsaw puzzle piece, Kefalonia is an island full of bays and beaches so if incredible vistas, snorkelling and seeing turtles are your thing you won’t be disappointed. The waters are the bluest and clearest we have seen. Equally, if visiting Greek landmarks, historic towns and villages and Castles is how you wish to spend your days, many an hour can be spent in the harbour-front tavernas watching the world go by. We enjoyed doing this in Assos.

Make the most out of Kefalonia with these recommendations from our trip in August 2024…

1. Rent a boat from Poros and visit the unseen beaches only accessible by water, fewer crowds and incredible views as you sail the Ionian sea.

2. Spend a day at Myrtos in the clearest water and dramatic cliffs and the secluded Antisamos beach, where you can enjoy watersports.

3. Explore Karavomylos Lake, Melissani and Drogarati caves all minutes from Sami.

4. Spend a day visiting the Venetian villages of Fiscardo and Assos. Head to Fiscardo in the morning and drop into Assos for lunch or an afternoon spritzer.

5. Enjoy waterfront walks and taverna dining in Fiscardo, Skala, Sami, Poros and Assos and Agia Efimia.

6. Drop into Argostoli and take a boat trip with the crew on the Queen Bee – where you will visit beaches only reachable via boat. On your return explore the lively streets of Argostoli.

Assos is quite possibly the most beautiful village on the island. That and Agia Efimia were our favourite harbour villages. Assos sits on a narrow strip of land between two shining bodies of water, tucked away on the western coast. For the adventurers, there is a huge fortress that sits above the town, you can hike up to see the spectacular view as you look back over the village. And you’re very close to Myrtos beach and Fiscardo. Fiscardo has become popular with the yachtie crowd. It’s authentic, beautiful and lined with shops and restaurants on the waterfront.

If you have any questions about Kefalonia or are looking for a particular recommendation, drop me a message. Have the best time on the island, we found Greece to be stunning. We are still undecided on our favourite, between Crete and Kefalonia. Let me know what you think.
