We have just returned from a wonderful break over the May half-term. We escaped to the truly beautiful village of Portloe in Cornwall. They say it’s all about the location, I can confirm this Cove on the Roseland Peninsula is magical. We have been visiting Cornwall since 2018 and can confirm that it will be an annual tradition for many years.
So after many messages from you lovely lot, here I am sharing where we stayed, after returning for a second time in as many years, although in truth I would like to keep this location a secret. I think you’ll agree.
Hillside, a Cottage, located in the stunning Portloe Village – a Georgian gem hidden amid the outstanding beauty of the Roseland Peninsula is just 15 minutes from Mevagissey, 40 minutes from Newquay and 60 minutes from St Ives. It is the perfect place to start your Cornish adventure. Situated on a hillside, sophisticated and cosy chic in design, with a warm and friendly atmosphere oozing out of the family who have designed and run the Cottage. Also, it is of course dog friendly.
What more could you ask for?
Hillside Cottage Review, Cornwall 2023
What did we like about Hillside Cottage?
It is a hidden gem. Minutes from the sea and with the most beautiful view from the stable door – you look down to the crystal blue water – it is quite simply perfect and the only way to spend a morning or evening. After long beach days, you’ll fall asleep in the comfiest beds and you’ll wake to the sounds of the ocean and birds singing. There’s so much to love about the Cottage. For us, we chose it for its style – we do love a Georgian property and of course, its location. Set in a Cove, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of nearby towns. It is a truly gorgeous space to escape to.
Where did we eat when staying at Hillside Cottage?
The owners of Hillside, Susan and Tony are very welcoming and really helpful with recommendations of where to eat and drink. After visiting this specific area twice and exploring the North Cornwall area for a third time we have so many to share with you.
The Hidden Hut, Sharks Fin, Standard Inn, Plume of Feathers, Jam Jar, Seaspray, Fistral Fish House, The Boathouse, Wax at Watergate Bay, Gylly’s Beach Cafe, Lusty Glaze Pizza, The Atlantic Fryer, The Harbour Catch, West Porthmeor, St Ives Bakery and Porthmeor Cafe.
Location, Location, Location
As I’ve mentioned the location of Hillside is perfect for exploring, situated near Truro you are within commutable distances to smaller bays, less crowded beaches and the larger more well-known areas of Cornwall. You’ll also stumble across incredible stops on the way. As a family we enjoy exploring, whereas if you would prefer to stay in amongst the hustle and bustle then perhaps Portloe isn’t for you.
We travelled a few hundred miles and would not have had the same experience had we not. We visited incredible beaches, saw breathtaking views and ate some very good food – quite literally we had an awesome time. The views were stop-you-in-your-tracks moments.
