Bobby, our Chocolate Labrador Retriever just loves to go on an adventure. So when we started to think about camping as a family, we knew he would join us. I will admit that it does need a lot of planning. I’d go as far to say that you need a dog checklist just like you need one when packing for yourself.
This is was our third time camping with Bob and finally we feel like we got it right. And it would seem that there are a lot of people travelling with puppies and dogs this year which explains why my DM’s over on Insta exploded whilst we were camping in Wales last week. So, I thought I would transfer all my answers into a little blog post. Hopefully it helps some of you fur baby families in your planning and preparation for a camping trip.
What to pack for a camping adventure with your dog
1 – Food and food/water bowls – don’t forget to pack their food. You don’t want to adjust their diet if you can help it. Bobby is raw fed so we take a long his frozen food and keep it chilled in a freezer/cool box.
2 – Water bottle – perfect for whilst you are travelling, essential for when you are out exploring as it can be stored easily in a back pack.
3 – Sun shade – when we travelled last week the UK was experiencing a mini heatwave, we were so thankful that we managed to pick one up as it definitely helped us when we were out and about. Perfect for on the beach as it kept Bob cool and in the shade.
4 – Bed or blanket, towels (home comforts) – we haven’t managed to find space to pack Bob’s bed as yet. I know he would settle much better at night. He sleeps well but moves about a lot. We also take towels for those trips to the sea!
5 – Toys – a must on your packing list as just like kids your furry babies will get bored but with their toys they will entertain themselves!
6 – Stake and long cable – an absolute must. We picked ours up from Pets at Home however I know they can be found in B&M also. You can use them at the campsite, the beach – great for when you are pitching and dropping the tent and for when you are just relaxing. Ours really does give us peace of mind.
7 – Collar and lead (and spare) – wouldn’t that be a disaster if forgotten. We always take a spare in case they get lost, damaged or wet.
8 – Treats, snacks and poo bags – sounds simple but so many campers around us asked for poo bags as they had forgotten them. We take dog biscuits, carrots, apples, raw treats and yoghurt for his lick plate. We have also taken a dog bone from the butchers that kept him happy for hours one day.
9 – Windbreaker – we haven’t done this as yet but I saw another family do it and thought it was a great idea as their dog didn’t like other dogs or people walking by the tent. Perfect for privacy and to help keep your fur baby happy and settled.
10 – First aid kit – we took our Leucillin spray as we know this gives instant relief to any cuts or scrapes.
