Wardrobe basics every girl needs…
So, grab a cuppa and join me in a little fashion update. I’ve wanted to write one of these posts for a little while so here goes.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, mainly because I haven’t been able to hit the Zara & Topshop Sales this year, we’re saving for a big holiday in 2019 you see so I’m being frugal. Or should I say Mr H is encouraging me to be so. When I say encouraging me he has quite literally put me on a spending ban at my favourite time of year to shop in the sales. As much as I would love to be unboxing a Zara haul with you right now, I am having a good old look through my wardrobe of yesteryear and looking at what I can reinvent.
I think the secret to having a wardrobe you can open and find something to wear each day without the ‘I have nothing to wear’ look on your face, is having a handful of basics that can be worn all year around. Something I have learnt over the years, more so since becoming a Mummy as sadly I now share my clothing budget with a little man who loves his clothes as much as I do.
Whether its a white tee or a blazer these wardrobe basics will see you through each season. I’ve picked out 10 of my favourites, ones which help me transition from one season to the next, those items that I just couldn’t be without. As someone who likes to shop the latest trends and mix them with my favourites but in reality doesn’t have an endless budget I think this is the safest way to be able to afford to look on trend and stylish all year round.
A white tee…
I think 2017/18 has been the year for a slogan tee, I for one have invested in so many over the last few months. My favourites have been from Topshop & New Look. I’m so glad that I fell head over heels with this trend as I have really enjoyed mixing them up. A white tee paired with a blazer, jeans, midi or mini skirt have definitely been high up on the ‘go to’ outfit for me. Whether on a date day with Mr H or a Mummy and Son date during half term.
A midi dress…
This has been my go to outfit for so many years now, I think this dress was one of the first maxi dresses I picked up after getting my body confidence back 3 years ago. I’ve always been a girly girl when it comes to my clothes which I think shows in what’s on my basics list. Definitely a favourite. For me this is the perfect outfit, relaxed, comfy and super stylish as the dress feels updated with the addition of the blazer and a pair of trainers.
A pair of trainers…
Since the beginning of the year I have gone all out and invested in 3 pairs of trainers, best decision I have made. White Stan Smiths, Reebok Classics and a sparkly pink pair of Converse (of course). The best purchase by far as they just add that special something to an outfit I didn’t realise was missing until I started to play around in my dressing room. They are my new favourite. And best of all with the exception of the pink cons they look great with socks or tights during the colder months.
A blazer…
I have loved blazers for as long as I can remember, more so than when Primark released this version and River Island blessed the high street with their candy floss beauty (pictured above). As I like to wear soft feminine dresses and floaty skirts I prefer a loose fit and less structured blazer, and one that sits inline with my bottom. A blazer is THE perfect layer for those not so warm days. I don’t see this trend disappearing anytime soon and with the sales in full swing you could grab a bargain just in time for Autumn. Think layers and texture. I have added my favourites over on my Style Loves page if you fancy a little look.
A trench coat…
Is it wrong that I’m already so excited to wear this coat? It was by far my best buy in the Zara January sale. The colour, the length, the fit. It has a pink check running through it too which of course makes me happy. I think it was all I posted on my Instagram feed at the beginning of the year. I have a green one too and each winter they are my two favourite coats. I just love how long and oversized they are yet still look so feminine. And that would be my top tip, go long. You’ll be surprised how amazing it looks especially when worn with a mini skirt or dress underneath. An best of all they look great with trainers! This year I have my sights set on a grey one.
Breton stripes…
And why not. They go with every outfit. Stripes for life. Whether it’s with a pair of jeans and a blazer, a midi skirt or to dress down a sparkly number – I will always add a new one to my wardrobe each year. Laura Ashley have been my go to for a Breton as I love the material and fit, they also have a few other colours which I might try this year. It’s good to mix it up although doesn’t that go against having a ‘basics’ wardrobe? I’m not sure.
A pair of salt-water sandals…
Every girl (and child) needs a pair of salt-water sandals. Indeed they are an investment piece at £50+ but in all seriousness they do stand the test of time. They wear well due to how they are made, quality for sure. I love them because of can paddle in them when we are at the seaside and they go with EVERYTHING in my wardrobe. I just LOVE them I do. I chose the rose gold but oh my goodness you are quite literally spoilt for choice. This is my third summer wearing them and they are always the first sandal I choose when the weather turns.
Leopard print…
Need I say more? A wardrobe staple for sure. For as long as I remember I have loved leopard but in recent years have only just found the confidence to wear it with sass. I love how you can dress an outfit up and actually despite it being a bold print how versatile it is. If you’re struggling with how to style the infamous print then do take a little look at my style tips post.
A straw bag…
This year’s must have accessory – the straw bag. There are so many on the high street I have fell in love when browsing the last few months however when I saw the Alice Bag over on Sunshine & Shade I couldn’t resist indulging. If I had my way I would have a least another two from these but of course I don’t really need them. Although in defence of a straw bag they are so versatile and lend themselves well to both formal and casual outings.
A mini skirt…
Years ago I owned a mini denim skirt and in all honesty I never really saw them coming back into fashion. I always felt a little uncomfortable with the length. I’ve always favoured a midi. That was until last October when I saw this mini in Topshop but in a black (pictured above). And then as Spring/Summer arrived I knew that adding a blue version was a must. I’m most excited for wearing them on holiday with a kimono, costume or even an off the shoulder top in the evenings. This is one purchase I am glad that I took a risk on. Again a versatile piece of clothing that can be worn through the seasons. I just love that.
Would you add anything to this list? I regularly share my style loves over on my Instagram. If you aren’t following me then I would love to see you over there. Do say hello.
Love this post K/A omg I am off to check out those sandals, I adore Blazers they are my staple item although I have just purchased a denim jacket which I havent had since my teens, but figured it is perfect for wearing with dresses x
Aww thanks lovely. The sandals for me are a great investment piece, I wouldn’t be without them. Oh yes I love a denim jacket, perfect for layering and when we’re in between seasons x
I love this list and I am happy to say maybe I am in with style as I have all your recommended staples here. lol 🙂 Fab outfits that one on the beach with straw bag is my favorite and then the leopard print top is gorgeous on you hunny. #wrc
Aww I am so glad that you like the list. Definitely my basics that are seeing me through. I do love the kimono, definitely glad I made the purchase x
My wardrobe consists of jeans (one thing I would add you your list maybe – a really good pair of jeans), jumpers and boots in winter, and shorts/skirts, TShirts and ballet pumps in summer, all in denim and black! I’m comfy in it and I think they suit my shape so I’m happy with it, though I would like to mix things up a bit I think. I do love a mini skirt and I LOVE the idea of wearing one in winter with a long coat over the top – I’m due a new coat as mine is ancient so I think I might give that a try. I have to say I really hate blazers on me – they just don’t suit me at all. You always look fantastic in them though! I’ve wanted a pair of saltwater sandals for ages, though I had no idea they were so expensive. An investment piece as you say and worth it for the years of wearyou get out of them I guess.
I’m all about the basics and the classics. For me it’s jeans and good coats in the winter, and light dresses in summer. Great list hon xx
I think sometimes its good to have those basics ticked off. You know me I’m all about the coats x
