A dream bathroom makeover

It never occurred to me when we spent most of last year saving our pennies, the effect of giving our little bathroom a makeover would have on us. On how it would transform the way we feel about bath-time. The way we feel about our house. It has revolutionised bath time for us all. Oh how I crave a long hot soak in my tub, but never before! Now forever more. Simply heaven. For eight years we have lived with a rather ugly space but as we took on a renovation project we really had to prioritise which rooms to tackle first. Over the years the bathroom went from bad to worse, it was leaking and generally in need of scrapping. The last twelve months were the worst when the shower broke. There was no shower and no shower head, oh yes I was washing my hair with a jug from the kitchen. Eek.

Fancy a little snoop around our bathroom…

When I say that this bathroom makeover was eight years overdue it really was, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. As the end of the year approached I was dreaming of a relaxing hot bath. Thankfully we took the plunge in November, we emptied our savings pot and despite it being a little disruptive, showering at neighbours and bathing Lil G in the kitchen sink it really is my second favourite room in the house. Its ok to eat your lunch in the bathroom isn’t it? I haven’t quite gone that far yet but I do love the floor and it’s the best place for taking pictures as it’s so light. It’s a bloggers dream!

We wanted to create a space that was bright, beautiful and one which we’d be sad to leave behind when we moved to our next home. Although right now I’d somehow take it all with me!  It’s possible we’ll be staying around a little longer.

Our rather dreamy bathroom came together in a flash once we’d made some rather big decisions, and with no hiccups thanks to the very talented Paul from PP Plumbing. He was a pleasure to have around the house, really helpful and full of advice for two DIY novices. Styling and buying accessories we can do, mapping out the space was where we needed some guidance and Paul was more than happy to help. We had a vision and he helped us to realise it.

After sharing some photos on my Instagram feed which have received so much love, I thought I would share with you our choices and where all the pieces came from. We have more accessories to buy, especially some photos on the walls and a ladder for towels but for the most part we are so very happy.

We had been stalking a bathroom suite online for most of the year and were so happy to have found a supplier of Burlington Bathrooms to be stocked in a local family run business. I much prefer to buy local and it goes without saying that we were not disappointed with the service from NPH Supplies. We had so many questions about the fittings and fixtures and ones which can’t be answered by shopping online! Buying a bathroom suite, as we found out can be quite tricky and it turned out that we needed the team at NPH to guide us on more than one occasion. The team were so helpful and worked super quick too, which suited our timeframes. Choosing the right fixtures and fittings for your space, which if anything like ours is super small (2mx2m) can be a mine field.

As it had been a long and arduous eight years waiting for this space to be transformed, choosing the perfect bathroom was a huge task and one which weighed heavily on our minds. We were spending nearly a years savings on this transformation and we wanted everything to be perfect and that started with the tiles! Apart from the bath (oh the bath), the tiles have to be my favourite part of the makeover. We really do love them so much. They add just the right amount of colour and contrast against the white bathroom suite and walls. The floor tiles were from tile manufacturer Original Style and the wall tiles were hand crafted by The Winchester Tile Company. A little over indulgent but totally worth it. It was after all our dream bathroom. We wanted them to have a wow factor, that they do.

As the suite was white we wanted to add a little colour with the accessories. We warmed the room up a little with the help of this mirror and wall unit. We also needed to create the illusion of space as our bathroom is so dinky. After some research we opted for a 5ft mirror which pretty much covers one wall. It really does make the bathroom feel so much bigger. And you can’t beat a few ducks for decoration to keep our little man happy!

After a lot of planning, saving and a little creativity I am so pleased with our bathroom makeover. Such a transformation. A bright, beautiful and tranquil haven to be treasured. The joy it brings some 3 months after, at the end of a long day hasn’t yet disappeared. Is there anything better than a glass of fizz in the bath? It certainly is my place to escape. Next I need to take my book in, I think I’ll correct that this weekend. Before the transformation we were so embarrassed with the bathroom, I would cringe when visitors came over, we would spend as little time as possible in the room. I think we love the bathroom so much more because we waited so long to have it just right.

And wait for it, here are a couple of ‘before’ photo’s, just so you can see how truly ugly and sad the space once was…

It’s absolutely beautiful and no wonder you are so happy with it. I love the tiles and the bath is just gorgeous. I completely relate to how you feel about the bathroom. We have been doing lots of work on our house and we had our bathroom done just over a year and a bit ago now. It really transformed the way I feel about our home, it just made such a difference. x

Oh KA I can totally understand how delighted you are. First of all, the bathroom is gorgeous! Well done. Worth the wait.
We had a similar experience with our ugly, out-dated bathroom. The tiles were falling off the walls and it was just horrible. But now I love it. It is definitely my favourite room in the house, and like yours, the best for photos too!

This is just so gorgeous, I can completely understand why you’re over the moon with it! I’m really inspired by what you’ve achieved with a small space. I adore the tiles and the bath, just stunning. We are years away from being able to sort our bathroom which I really dislike but this makes me realise it’s totally worth taking the time to save up and do it just right!

What an amazing transformation. The floor tiles are so beautiful and really add to the overall bathroom. Love the collection of ducks (which I presume are Lil G lol). No wonder you cant wait for bath time now, of course with a glass of fizz #HomeEtc xx

I think you could have replaced the word “bathroom” with the word “kitchen” and pretty much described our kitchen (apart form having baths in it!!). Anyway, the stand out piece for me is the towel rail. That looks truly awesome. Floor tiles are also great. You should, by the way, see our bathroom. It is in a dreadful state! #HomeEtc

I love those floor tiles and the radiator. It is completely transformed and I can see why you are so happy with it! Must be bliss relaxing in there now, our bathrooms are quite dull but as we are in a new build doesn’t seem much point in changing them round just yet, would love one like this though xx
