Saturday evening means only one thing, date night with my boys. Whether it is home cooked food and a movie at home or heading out to a local family friendly restaurant I just love our little family tradition. Eating out was never as easy when Lil G was younger, he was fussy and wouldn’t sit whilst the food was served, I think we’ve all been there. The last two years since he reached the ages of four and five have been much more positive, eating out as a family is now something we all look forward to.
A few days ago we visited a local restaurant which had recently been refurbished, Brewers Fayre The Redwood in Stoke on Trent. It is one of the more traditional family friendly restaurants similar to those I visited when I was a little girl. Keen to try new places, as well as the fact they have introduced a play barn as part of the refurbishment we thought we would pop along.
With so much to choose from on the menu I was a little lost at first. Lil G soon found his way around the children’s menu and was so excited to choose his own food. As there were photos of the food to accompany the description it was really easy for him and when he changed his mind the staff were really helpful. It was nice to see so many vegetables and finger food included in the menu and honestly the idea of building your own wraps is genius. Lil G would have gone for this for sure if he hadn’t spied the hot dog!
We received our food promptly, although I would say that within 30 minutes of us arriving which was around 5pm there were several larger groups arriving so I can imagine the wait for food to be much lengthier. We much prefer eating just before the main crowds arrive and I would recommend the same for anyone visiting. Mr H and Lil G really enjoyed their food, my only criticism was that it wasn’t particular warm and that that the chips didn’t taste very fresh at all.
The biggest decision of the night was of course, which dessert to choose. Many a moment was spent deliberating between the build your own ice cream character and the chocolate pizza! As part of the children’s menu Lil G could choose from four desserts all at an additional £0.75 to the original meal price of £3.99. Such great value for a little person and some great little choices.
For those of you that know me well, will know that it is all about the dessert for me when dining out. If it was acceptable in a restaurant to start your meal with a sticky toffee pudding then I would! Lil G chose well, he went for a chocolate pizza which was a taste sensation.
Mine on the other hand was very disappointing, pulls sad face. The doughnuts and the chocolate sauce were cold, the sauce was incredibly bland. And to top it off they had sold out of waffles (at 5pm) which were substituted with profiteroles, although the profiteroles were yummy. We all know that chocolate sauce & doughnuts should be served warm right? For nearly £7 this dessert is in need of some modifying.
On the whole we enjoyed our experience, the staff were very helpful, accommodating and really happy which does make a difference to your experience. The atmosphere and cleanliness of the restaurant was fantastic and the play area was just the right size. I don’t think we will visit again but that isn’t to say that we didn’t enjoy our visit. As a family of three we dined for less than £50 which included mains, desserts and drinks.
Have you tried the menu at your local Brewers Fayre?
