He’s my brother…

life as our little family, pledge to play more with your pet

When we found out that we were pregnant we couldn’t help but wonder how our furry baby, who really was our first baby would adapt to his new big brother status. We rescued our doggy from a home in 2009 and until Lil G arrived he was our baby. He was only a few months old when we saved him from a life of begging on the streets, he was thin and looked so sad. By the time our gorgeous boy arrived he was healthy, happy and truly loved. Alfie is a part of our little family and as seasoned dog owners we were both so excited at the prospect of raising our baby boy with his furry friend by his side.

Both Mr H and I have such fond memories of growing up with dogs. Sharing your childhood with a mans best friend really is wonderful, who needs an imaginary friend when you have a furry one! The arrival of our gorgeous boy completed our little family in 2011 and since then there have been so many moments of pure love between them. I can still remember Alf’s reaction to Lil G when we first introduced them. For hours and those first few days he sat next to his moses basket, crying when Lil G cried, stirring when he wriggled about and coming to get my attention when he woke if I wasn’t in the room.

There have been so many moments which make me smile, that have melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes. When Alf lies next to his bed at bedtime and doesn’t leave his side until he has fallen asleep. When they stand at the bedroom window talking about the day or the people walking past, or should I say Lil G talking to Alf. Then there is their little routine on a weekend, which really is the sweetest thing, on both a Saturday and a Sunday morning my boys together as a three head out to the field for a morning run. They play, laugh and often come home covered in mud full of tales about their adventure. Watching them grow up together is just so blooming gorgeous.

And so when I was approached by More Than to take part in their let’s pledge to play more with our pets campaign, I couldn’t help but get involved. More Than have a really exciting campaign starting that both you and your pet are going to love! They are launching the Play More Pledge, in which they are challenging people to spend an extra 15 minutes per day playing with your dog or cat. It’ll benefit your pet by making them happier, healthier and they’ll love you even more. You’ll also notice it cheers you up and makes you take a minute to appreciate your pet and the great time you spend together.

What I love about this campaign is that it pushed us to take our furry baby out to one of our favourite local gardens, Trentham Gardens. We have annual passes and visit regularly as a three but sadly due to Alfie’s inquisitive and excitable nature, as well as him not really favouring crowds of people, we often stick to our local field which must get a little boring for him. One Friday night in August, when the gardens are open much later we packed up the car and headed out. We walked around the lake and woodland area with a stick in one hand and a frisbee in the other.

As we wandered around the gardens we bumped into a family who like most wanted to say hello to Alf. What happened next left me smiling and feeling so emotional, now I know I’m a bit of an emotional person anyway but really is there anything cuter than a little boy showing his love for his furry friend. One of the children asked what his name was and Lil G’s response went a little like this… He’s my big brother, his name is Alfie Bear, would you like to say hello? He likes it when you tickle him under his chin, go on have a go, he’ll lick you if he likes it.

And if you are a dog lover like our little family and in need of some inspiration on Dog Days Out then do head over to the More Than website where they are sharing their top tips on how to treat your doggy to a little day out. We have a few left to tick off on this list!

Do you have a pet? It would be lovely to see a photo of you and your pet having some outdoors fun together. I’m a huge softy when it comes to our furry baby and I am so glad that our little boy is growing up with what he calls is his big brother.

That is so lovely. We had a fur baby first too and I love how protective she is over our children. She’s still top dog. It’s lovely seeing them all play together although, when I say play, the dog is usually sniffing round for food 😉

What a lovely dog you have KA! My parents were cat people when I was growing up so we never had a dog, but I do really, really want one to be part of our family now, I think my two would love having a faithful, furry family member x
